Cult Of Luna – In the Shadow of Your Shadow
The title track from Cult of Luna’s forthcoming tenth studio album takes as its starting point an old trauma that resurfaces – written from the perspective of what Johannes Persson calls "the traitor within", a destructive part of oneself that one thought had been defeated. It’s a heavy opener for a band that has always known how to imbue heaviness with meaning.

For 25 years, Cult of Luna have been one of the most uncompromising forces in heavy music. Hailing from Umeå, Sweden, they have continually pushed the boundaries of post-metal through an ever-evolving catalogue. With the title track from their forthcoming album *In the Shadow of Your Shadow*, they demonstrate that they are far from finished pushing boundaries.
The track begins with a chanting riff that sticks in your head straight away. It’s hypnotic, almost circular, and Johannes Persson’s growling vocals lay over it like something inevitable. The drums drive the track forward without rushing. There is a soaring calm to the opening section which nevertheless harbours something unsettling beneath the surface – a dark mood that never descends into pure gloom, but which never lets go either.
Around the three-minute mark, the song changes character. The metal riffs take centre stage, and the music gradually opens up – as if the pressure from within has finally found a way out. A minute later, it all gives way to a calm, melancholic section. It’s beautiful, and it’s precisely here that the track reveals its true weight: in the silence rather than in the noise. Then it builds up again towards the opening riff, with the drums now pounding towards a finale that’s bigger than the beginning – just as good Cult of Luna songs always end, on a higher note than they began.
The track clocks in at 7 minutes and 34 seconds. That’s enough time for the music to mean something.
According to the band themselves, recent losses have inspired much of the album’s themes, and the title track portrays recurring pain as a parasite that returns through old emotional wounds. That interpretation rings true – the soundscape isn’t just coincidentally sombre; it’s precise.
The line-up for the track features Thomas Hedlund on drums, Andreas Johansson on bass, Fredrik Kihlberg on guitar, Johannes Persson on guitar and vocals, and Kristian Karlsson on keyboards – with Daniel Berglund on additional keyboards. The album was co-produced by Daniel Berglund and mixed by Magnus Lindberg.
The album *In the Shadow of Your Shadow* is due for release on 6 November 2026 via Red Crk Recordings. The title track is a great first impression.
